Visits to Helmshore Textile Museum
On Thursday 1st December and Friday 2nd December, our Year 9 History students enjoyed half-day visits to Helmshore Textile Museum. The visits gave the pupils the opportunity to study Lancashire’s industrial heritage as part of the KS3 unit on the Industrial Revolution.

Bar Mock Trial
Our sixth form students have been very successful and represented the school in the final of the North West Bar Mock Trial Competition. This Competition gives students an exciting and innovative insight into the workings of the legal system. With the kind help of a local barrister, Hilary Manley, students get a chance to delve into the processes involved in presenting cases in a Crown Court.

Success for Girls’ Ski Team
On Sunday 20th November the Girls’ Ski Team represented the school at the British Schools’ Dry Slope Championships in Edinburgh. The team came 13th out of 25 teams and Beth Widdup (Year 12) gained second place.

The Solomon Art Exhibition
An art exhibition, organised by Year 13 student Naomi White for her Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), will be held on Sunday 20th November. It is hoped that the exhibition will raise at least £3000 for the Solomon project, which provides meals for 6,000 children in three schools in the Langas shanty town district of Eldoret, in Kenya.

Year 9 Geography trip to Grasmere
The whole of Year 9 recently embarked on an exciting adventure walking up to Easedale Tarn in the Lake District. Students began in Grasmere village exploring the reasons for the high influx of tourists each year and the services available to the locals and tourists.

Year 10 Geography Trip to Malham and Castle Cement
Our Year 10 students had an exciting and dusty day visiting Malham Village, Malham Tarn and Castle Cement in Clitheroe recently. They explored the many different tourist uses of Malham Village and discovered how the limestone pavement was formed (famous for its appearance in one of the Harry Potter films). In addition to this, they were given a guided tour around the quarry and working of Castle Cement. A fantastic day for Geography!

German Exchange 2011
Two coach trips, a plane journey and some very quick dashes through torrential downpours of rain brought us to a whooping crowd assembled outside Gymnasium Martinum, our German partner school in Emsdetten. Apprehensive yet excited, we leaped off the coach to greet our partners and their families, said goodbye to our friends, and went ‘home’ for the first time.

Year 10 Liverpool Trip
On Tuesday 19th July, Year 10 students visited the Tate Liverpool and the Merseyside Maritime Museum. The students also had time to explore the Albert Dock and visit some of the many cafés and restaurants in the area.

With the London 2012 Olympic Games fast approaching, the PE Department has been investigating ways that the Games can be brought to life at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School. The PE Department wants to inspire learners of all ages and abilities to get involved in the Olympics in some way.

Capable of giving Lord Alan Sugar’s apprentices a run for their money, a 20 strong team of 16-year olds from Clitheroe Royal Grammar School and their thriving eco gift bag firm, thecompany, will represent the North West in the national finals of the Young Enterprise Awards 2011 to find Britain’s most promising young business people.

Sports Personality of the Year Awards
The PE Department recently held its annual ‘Sports Personality of the Year’ Awards evening at The Grand in Clitheroe. Mr Edmondson, along with Year 9 Sports Ambassadors, Joe Macfarlane, Grace Birtwell and Alice McKenna, hosted the celebration which was attended by over 200 students and parents.

Our 1st XI football team were victorious against Ripley St Thomas in the final at Nelson football club. The team fought hard to come from a goal behind to draw level at half-time with a goal from Harry Devine.

Fashion Show 2011
Anticipation mounted backstage as the models hurriedly donned their garments, applied make-up and fixed their hair. A runway, a cheering audience and bright lights awaited them, with live music and a witty commentator - all for the Clitheroe Royal Grammar School Fashion Show 2011! Year 11 dance group Enigma started the show off with a bang as they performed their contest-winning dance routine.

Young Enterprise Triumph
On Monday 4th April, the school’s Young Enterprise team, thecompany, travelled to Mytton Fold for the East Lancashire final of the Young Enterprise Competition. Up against stiff competition from 9 other local schools, the team had to put together a high quality trade stand, withstand a gruelling interview from the judges and give a 5-minute presentation about their company and ideas.

Speech Night

Young Enterprise Successes 2010
Eclipse was formed in September of 2009 and consisted of 21 company members from year 11. We elected a variety of directors including our MD which was Alex Foote. Through weekly meetings, we brainstormed ideas and came up with our main product- Christmas Hampers.
As a company, we took great care to find local produce to take pride of place, and the hampers ended up consisting of a vast selection of different produce.

Academy School Status
A new Academies Bill has been introduced by the Government and, as Clitheroe Royal Grammar School is a school rated “outstanding” by Ofsted, we are automatically eligible to apply.
Becoming an academy school is certainly worth considering and we have registered our interest with the Department for Education.

Rotary Young Writer of the Year 2008
Lucy Woods was the local winner and district finalist in the Rotary Young Writer of the Year 2008 competition and is to spend a day shadowing Vivien Meath, Editor of the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times, in the summer holidays.
