Visits to Helmshore Textile Museum

On Thursday 1st December and Friday 2nd December, our Year 9 History students enjoyed half-day visits to Helmshore Textile Museum.  The visits gave the pupils the opportunity to study Lancashire’s industrial heritage as part of the KS3 unit on the Industrial Revolution. 

Bar Mock Trial

Our sixth form students have been very successful and represented the school in the final of the North West Bar Mock Trial Competition.  This Competition gives students an exciting and innovative insight into the workings of the legal system.  With the kind help of a local barrister, Hilary Manley, students get a chance to delve into the processes involved in presenting cases in a Crown Court.

Success for Girls’ Ski Team

On Sunday 20th November the Girls’ Ski Team represented the school at the British Schools’ Dry Slope Championships in Edinburgh.  The team came 13th out of 25 teams and Beth Widdup (Year 12) gained second place.

The Solomon Art Exhibition

An art exhibition, organised by Year 13 student Naomi White for her Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), will be held on Sunday 20th November.  It is hoped that the exhibition will raise at least £3000 for the Solomon project, which provides meals for 6,000 children in three schools in the Langas shanty town district of Eldoret, in Kenya.

Year 9 Geography trip to Grasmere

The whole of Year 9 recently embarked on an exciting adventure walking up to Easedale Tarn in the Lake District.  Students began in Grasmere village exploring the reasons for the high influx of tourists each year and the services available to the locals and tourists.

Main School Charity Committee 2010/2011

The charity committee for the year 2010/2011 is pleased to announce that we have raised a grand total of £2911.51 for various charities both local and international. 

Year 10 Geography Trip to Malham and Castle Cement

Our Year 10 students had an exciting and dusty day visiting Malham Village, Malham Tarn and Castle Cement in Clitheroe recently.  They explored the many different tourist uses of Malham Village and discovered how the limestone pavement was formed (famous for its appearance in one of the Harry Potter films).  In addition to this, they were given a guided tour around the quarry and working of Castle Cement.  A fantastic day for Geography!

A Level News

Well done to all our students who have received their A Level results today.  The results are outstanding and truly reflect the hard work and dedication of students and staff and the tremendous support from parents.

German Exchange 2011

Two coach trips, a plane journey and some very quick dashes through torrential downpours of rain brought us to a whooping crowd assembled outside Gymnasium Martinum, our German partner school in Emsdetten.  Apprehensive yet excited, we leaped off the coach to greet our partners and their families, said goodbye to our friends, and went ‘home’ for the first time.

Year 10 Liverpool Trip

On Tuesday 19th July, Year 10 students visited the Tate Liverpool and the Merseyside Maritime Museum.  The students also had time to explore the Albert Dock and visit some of the many cafés and restaurants in the area.

Counting Down to London 2012

With the London 2012 Olympic Games fast approaching, the PE Department has been investigating ways that the Games can be brought to life at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School.  The PE Department wants to inspire learners of all ages and abilities to get involved in the Olympics in some way.

Success at the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley School Sports Awards 2011

Students from Clitheroe Royal Grammar School were extremely successful at the recent sports awards, which were held at the Dunkenhalgh Hotel in Accrington.  The awards celebrated the success of the exceptional sports performances of students in the area.

Clitheroe Castle Visit

On Tuesday 12th July, Year 7 students enjoyed half-day visits to Clitheroe Castle.  The visits were designed to reinforce the pupils’ knowledge about Castles and the events of 1066.

Young Enterprise Team to represent the North West

Capable of giving Lord Alan Sugar’s apprentices a run for their money, a 20 strong team of 16-year olds from Clitheroe Royal Grammar School and their thriving eco gift bag firm, thecompany, will represent the North West in the national finals of the Young Enterprise Awards 2011 to find Britain’s most promising young business people.

Sports Personality of the Year Awards

The PE Department recently held its annual ‘Sports Personality of the Year’ Awards evening at The Grand in Clitheroe.  Mr Edmondson, along with Year 9 Sports Ambassadors, Joe Macfarlane, Grace Birtwell and Alice McKenna, hosted the celebration which was attended by over 200 students and parents.

U19 Lancashire Cup Football Final

Our 1st XI football team were victorious against Ripley St Thomas in the final at Nelson football club.  The team fought hard to come from a goal behind to draw level at half-time with a goal from Harry Devine.

Hyndburn & Ribble Valley Schools Athletics Competition

Excellent results were achieved by our Athletics team at the recent HRVS Athletics competition. The team finished 3rd overall out of the 10 schools taking part, a fantastic achievement.

Year 8 Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Cup Triumph

The final of the Year 8 Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Schools Football Cup between Clitheroe Royal Grammar School and Ribblesdale High School was held on Friday 27 May 2011 on the new 3G all-weather pitch at CRGS.

Year 11 Prom

Congratulations to our Year 11 students who celebrated the end of 5 years of study with us on Thursday 12th May 2011 at the Mytton Fold hotel and golf complex.

Fashion Show 2011

Anticipation mounted backstage as the models hurriedly donned their garments, applied make-up and fixed their hair. A runway, a cheering audience and bright lights awaited them, with live music and a witty commentator - all for the Clitheroe Royal Grammar School Fashion Show 2011! Year 11 dance group Enigma started the show off with a bang as they performed their contest-winning dance routine.

Young Enterprise Triumph

On Monday 4th April, the school’s Young Enterprise team, thecompany, travelled to Mytton Fold for the East Lancashire final of the Young Enterprise Competition.  Up against stiff competition from 9 other local schools, the team had to put together a high quality trade stand, withstand a gruelling interview from the judges and give a 5-minute presentation about their company and ideas.

Speech Night

Thank you to everyone who attended our speech night and prize giving ceremony on Wednesday 30th March 2011 at King George’s Hall, Blackburn.  This was an exceptionally well attended evening and gave the opportunity for governors, staff, students, parents and guests to recognise the considerable achievements and talents of our current students as well as our most recent leavers.

Official Opening of the All-Weather Pitch

CRGS has always dreamed of having even more exceptional sports facilities, and now that dream has become a reality. After months of building work watched with anticipation by the entire school, a state-of-the-art all-weather pitch has been added to our resources.

Academy School Status

We were delighted to receive a letter from Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Education, confirming that our application to become a school with Academy Status had been successful with a conversion date of 1st January, 2011.

The impact of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School

Clitheroe Royal Grammar school already offered a range of 27 subjects when I took up my post in September 2008 and there was (and still is) a wide range of curriculum enrichment opportunities.  I was keen to introduce the EPQ, as I wanted to give our students something to capture their imagination and help to develop their independent learning and working skills....

Young Enterprise Successes 2010

Eclipse was formed in September of 2009 and consisted of 21 company members from year 11. We elected a variety of directors including our MD which was Alex Foote. Through weekly meetings, we brainstormed ideas and came up with our main product- Christmas Hampers.
As a company, we took great care to find local produce to take pride of place, and the hampers ended up consisting of a vast selection of different produce.

A commemoration of the life of Tom Purdy

On the afternoon of Friday 16th July, Clitheroe Royal Grammar School united as one on the school field in order to commemorate the life of the much missed Tom Purdy.

French Alps Trip

This summer saw sixty Geographers enjoying the warmth of the Southern French Alps whilst conducting fieldwork that will help them complete their A Level Geography course. Our photograph shows us working in the Ecrins National Park close to Glacier Blanc.

TLT (Talking Languages Together) - News

The language committee, TLT (Talking Languages Together), has always been interested in helping others to learn languages, in particular younger students from our feeder primary schools.

Academy School Status

A new Academies Bill has been introduced by the Government and, as Clitheroe Royal Grammar School is a school rated “outstanding” by Ofsted, we are automatically eligible to apply.

Becoming an academy school is certainly worth considering and we have registered our interest with the Department for Education.

Open Evening

Our Open Evening for prospective Year 7 students was held on Wednesday 9th September and we were delighted that so many young people were interested in joining the CRGS community.

Extended Schools Award

Ribble Valley Schools were Celebrating Success recently, with 100% of schools in the Ribble Valley having achieved Full Extended School Status, this means that they have achieved targets set by Government across the Core Offer which has been set under the Every Child Matters Agenda. 

National Art Competition Winner

The RS department entered Nyima Murry of 8S into a national art competition and she has been selected as one of the winners.

International School Award 2009-2012

We were delighted to receive news at the end of August that Clitheroe Royal Grammar School has been awarded the International Schools award, which will be presented at a ceremony in London in October 2009.  

Prefect Training 2009

The prefects at CRGS have always provided staff with invaluable support in the smooth running of the school. This year 95 students applied to be prefects.

Talking Languges Together Committee

On Wednesday, 25th March members of the Talking Languages Together Committee visited 7 local primary schools in the Ribble Valley.

Scuba Dive Training

30 students from Years 11, 12 and 13 are participating in the Clitheroe Royal Grammar School Operation Wallacea expedition to South Africa and Mozambique this summer. 

Year 10 Charity Committee

The Year 10 Charity Committee was formed several years ago and it has evolved into a thriving group which meets on a weekly basis to discuss fund-raising events.

School Council Take Action

Representatives of the School Council have contacted local councillors, expressing their concerns about road safety on Chatburn Road and asking for consideration to be given to the provision of a pedestrian crossing on the road.

Talented CRGS Linguists visit Lancaster University

On Wednesday 28th January 2009 and coinciding with celebrations in school of the Chinese New Year, ten talented linguists from Years 7 – 9 spent the day at Lancaster University.

Chinese New Year 09

On Monday 26th January 2009, we celebrated Chinese New Year.  Our photographs show pupils at our Chatburn Road site enjoying a Chinese meal including fortune cookies.  The pupils also took part in a Chinese Culture Quiz.

Rotary Young Writer of the Year 2008

Lucy Woods was the local winner and district finalist in the Rotary Young Writer of the Year 2008 competition and is to spend a day shadowing Vivien Meath, Editor of the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times, in the summer holidays.  Entrants were invited to write a story with the title “A Holiday Mystery”. 

Creative Writing Project

From January to March this year, a class of year 9 and a class of year 12 students had the opportunity  to work with two writers to develop their creative writing skills.  Alison White and John Siddique ran a series of creative writing workshops on Tuesday morning which allowed the students to explore.......

Student Transition Conference

On Monday 28 January we welcomed a group of Year 10 students from Skipton Girls’ High School (SGHS) and a group of Year 11 students from Brigshaw High School, Leeds to CRGS to take part in a conference’ Raising achievement through transition mentoring’.  The conference.......

Indonesia Expedition 2007

After 18 months of fund raising events, such as parties, cake stalls and supermarket packing, and training to get camp fit in events in the Yorkshire 3 peaks challenge, the group of 28 sixth formers and three staff finally departed on the C.R.G.S Indonesia Expedition in July this year........
