Sixth Form students, Grace Atkinson and Molly Dixon, accompanied by Mrs Salt, took part in a trip to the WWI battlefields as part of the national poetry recitation competition for 14-18 year olds, aimed at re-igniting the nation’s love of poetry!
The visit took place between 14th and 17th October and involved visiting the World War I battlefield sites, including trenches, underground bunkers and war memorials.
Poetry readings also took place: Head Girl, Grace, recited ‘Picnic’ by Rose Macaulay at Thiepval Memorial; Molly recited ‘Mametz Wood’ by Owen Sheers – in Mametz Wood; and Mrs Salt recited ‘The Lake Isle of Innisfree’ by Yeats in Vimy Ridge trenches. A visit to Menin Gate to hear the Last Post was also made.
There was time to look up the location of the graves of some of the 30 former CRGS students who died in action and other members of the Clitheroe community who gave their lives in the Great War which ended almost 100 years ago.
This amazing visit, recorded on video by Molly, ended with a viewing of a theatre production of Journey’s End in Ypres. The whole visit was an experience that will remain extremely poignant and memorable – ‘Lest we forget’.
