On 9th December 2018 Main School and Sixth Form students volunteered to distribute donations to the homeless of Manchester. A number of students report on the project.
Students and staff donated various items of clothing, bedding and food which were very much appreciated by the homeless people. We were given the opportunity to walk round the city assisted by The Manchester Homeless Project to support the homeless and make a difference to their day. Thank you to Miss Martin and Mrs Kinney for making this possible.

Clitheroe Royal Grammar School and The Homeless Project worked together in Manchester to help support people who are in need. We walked around some of the streets of Manchester donating items that Main School and Sixth Form students had collected. This was an eye-opening experience for us as it made us see the harsh realities that are everyday life for many people. We would like to thank the Homeless Project in Manchester for giving us this opportunity and would hope to volunteer again in the future.

My excursion to Manchester was a very humbling experience. I was appalled by the extreme squalor that some of these people lived in and was very happy to help distribute some items to help these people survive. Homelessness is something I would never wish on anyone. The conditions were terrible. Some people didn’t even have a tent to sleep in. When we complain about the cold we should just stop for a minute and think about people sitting on the street in the cold in insufficient clothing 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Being homeless has an impact not only on one’s physical health but also on one’s mental health. It is difficult for us to imagine what it’s like not to have somewhere to call home.
I feel that what we did was really important and I was glad we helped the homeless people even if, for some, it was just a case of giving them their next meal.

When we went to Manchester to hand out the shoeboxes and other donations, it was eye-opening to see how many homeless people there were and how thankful they were for the donations. This experience has definitely changed how we view our lives and made us appreciate how lucky we are.
